"Are their novels that are, at their core, optimistic about modernity? Or
any works of art, for that matter? Even books that are enthralled with
capitalism - the works of Ayn Rand comes to mind - criticize real, exisiting
modrn societies for being weak and collectivist. Having just read White
Noise and Brideshead Revistited, I can't help but feel dissapointed that the
smartest and best novelists - Pynchon, DeLillo, Waugh, hell, even Homer is
ambivalent about technology and modernity - have an overall message that
seems just wrong."
