"Ex---cellent" As Monty Burns would say.
Very good obs as his concerted attacks on "Industrialized Anything"
has been one of OBA's main talking points right from the get-go.
Of course, all of Pynchon is filled with "ands", evidence of
multiple, sometimes meshing and sometimes clashing ideas
that might be the causes of history or those threads of
historical progress that dissolve into cul-de-sacs, supplanted by
the usual stories: valor in battle trumps peace negotiations,
the mural of the "Struggle of the little guys to finish the mural," being
painted over for a poster imploring you to buy war bonds.
Stravinsky's gutteral rythmic clash, Schoenberg's nasuea-inducing
modulations, massive plans for industrialization and clear-cutting the
refuge of the Fae and the Gypsies, the last-round-up of the old
songs---hell, even Proust---all point to the old order being
supplanted by an un-sustainable new world order, the one
we've been stuck with for at least the last century.
