MONDAY 9
Land Of Kush performs an original Sam Shalabi composition of Arabic
orchestral music tonight at Suoni Per Il Popolo, inspired by author Thomas
Pynchon. More than 30 musicians will explore ideas of Orient/Occident
through the lens of Pynchon's obsession with the liberating and enslaving
qualities of science/technology. In all of his works a huge thematic thread
is the interzone between the freedom of scientific experimentation and
innovation, and how, almost without fail, exploitation becomes synonymous
with the state's control and dissemination through technology. (Put that in
your pipe and smoke it.) At Sala Rossa (4848 St-Laurent), 8 p.m., $10.
