Michael Chabon is a Pynchon fan, we know.

In an introduction to McSweeney's Mammoth Treasury of Thrilling Tales, he talks about how styles and forms in fiction can rule various eras, to the neglect of different forms and styles....

Then he asks us to imagine that in the last 50 years in England/Britain the "nurse romance" was the dominating style...go further and imagine it so dominated that NOTHING could be read as any good, could be published, could be THOUGHT OF, so to speak, outside of this genre................What would literary history for that period have been like?..........

He answers by saying, effectively, that the geniuses would still have written......Pynchon would have published his masterpiece, Blitz Nurse...............................................
