Hey!, ya know---guys have been looking for that inverted triangle stuff
fer like ages, man. It's like they wanna climb back in or sumthin'.

I think Pynchon always favors the expansion of possibilities and partially
because of that needs to demonstrate when and how those possibilities
get shut down and closed out. There's your revisionist history right there.
OBA has a need to set the record straight, to show that the possibility of
changing course never really goes away. Like Geli Tripping's True Love,
hope never really dies. These are forces that, try as they might, "They"
cannot control. Mind you, OBA goes to great pains to demonstrate how
far "They" can get, how hard "They" work at controling forces of nature
"They" really don't understand.

The era of Against the Day is the era of Hermann Hesse as well. If TRP wishes to
encrypt halcyon daze of youth into his metafictions Hesse has got to creep in
somewhere. This episode of Anarchist Heaven glimpsed as Yashmeen gives birth to
Ljubica reminds me of an episode from Steppenwolf where Harry Haller, getting
full value for his admission price to the Magic Theater, gets to indulge in a
bit of Anarchist folly himself with guns and bombs and 'real' people getting
killed. Harry may have slipped onto a shamanic alternative path, one of those
alternative universes that string theory pre-supposes.

One of the other bells I hear tolling is Hesse's "Journey to the East".

Characters are set on the path of the spiritual quest only to wander
off the path, lose hope and assume that the quest was a losing
proposition. The Volgelwanger of JTTE gets blown off course, only to catch up
with the flock on the backside. The atmosphere of implied theosophy in JTTE
hums in the background, what with the very notion of finding the Source
somewhere near the site of the historic Shambhala, hoping perhaps to find the
true Shambhala, that place where the real magic of the Compassionate takes
place. This of course already assumes that there's a historic, physically
manifest Shambhala just as the folks into the shroud of Turin assume there's
some sort of physical attachment of the cloth to the historical Jesus [which
assumes a historic Jesus]. Grails one and all and like Oedipa's quest,
quests of misdirection. Of course, the grail can be seen as a Jungian symbol
just as the capital letter V can be seen as a Jungian symbol. Judging from
CoL49, OBA knows a thing or two about the collective unconscious and
Jungian psychotherapy.

What is the revenge of the Traverses but an inverted grail, the Ace of Cups
reversed? One can see the quest for revenge for Webb's murder as one of
those sorts of quests, satanically inverted as regards the source of the
energy that drives that sort of quest. Reef seeks revenge. But the
Goddess has other plans for Reef. It might be that Reef's "assignment" is to
become Anarchist in all aspects of his life, not merely in his acts of
Public Activism but in all the little details of life, sexual companions as
well. Seeking V., he is presented with the possibility of being V.
