Nice catch. Of course with smoked goggles, it is always night, unless the day blasts through.
Note that "smoked goggles" appear three times in the text:
* 402, worn by a time traveller: "... Zoot, in workingman's fatigues, carpet-slippers, smoked goggles, and a peculiar helmet punctuated over its surface by not entirely familiar electrical fittings. 'So! Just in from the cows ...'"
* 951, worn by the-soon-to-be-monk: "Behind a pair of smoked goggles Cyprian recognized Mihály Vámos, a former hill-climbing champion on the Hungarian circuit. They had put in some time ..."
* 1085, worn by the Chums: "... They will put on smoked goggles for the glory of what is coming to part the sky. They fly toward grace."
