Unless I'm mistaken, space-balls are very cold until they heat up and subsequently explode in the atmosphere.  If you're not careful when dropping dry-ice, which is solidified gas, after all, into a liquid...

By the way, many of the photos of the aftermath of the event look an awful lot like the trees on the cover of Vineland. A-and we'll always have the trees being clear-cut in GR....
