The trio must be traveling again because ...
890.3 "One day in Monte Carlo..."
** Monte Carlo is several hundred miles around the Mediterranean
from Bagni di Lucca - on the Mediterranean near the Italian border
with France.
I presume they managed to get the francs together to take the train
for this 211 mile trip up past Genoa and around the Mediterranean.

890.3-6 "... who should show up but Reef's old New Orleans
Anarchist bunkmate Wolfe Tone O'Rooney..."
* O'Rooney is an historical character of the 18th century - an Irish
Republican involved with independence from Britain, involved in the
Irish Rebellion of 1798, sentenced to death.

The fictional O'Rooney was seen earlier (pgs 370 - 373 and 642) in
New Orleans headed to Mexico for the revolution which finally
occurred in 1910.

890.6 "... on his way to Barcelona which was all about to explode,
as it had been doing periodically, with Anarchist unruliness."
* Barcelona -
Anarchism in Spain: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchism_in_Spain
Two events in 1909 bolstered support for another general strike in
Barcelona. A textile factory was shut down, with 800 workers fired.
Across the industry, wages were being cut. Workers, even outside the
textile industry, began to plan for a general strike. At around the
same time, the government announced that military reserves would be
called up to fight in
In Morocco tribesmen were skirmishing with Spanish troops. The
reservists, mostly workingmen, were not keen to risk their lives or
kill others to protect what they characterised as the interests of
Spanish capitalists (the fighting was blocking routes to mines and
slowing business). Anti-war rallies sprang up across the country,
and talk of a general strike could be heard.
The strike began in Barcelona on July 26, a few weeks after the call
for reserves was made. It quickly developed into a widespread uprising

889.09 O'Rooney - "... we need you safe and well. Your fate is not
to be in the línea del fuego"
"línea del fuego" Spanish: line of (the) fire. This may be a naive
translation of "firing line" or "line of fire" (note the satisfying
ambiguity); línea de tiro seems to be preferred.

890.13 "Wolfe Tone explained then that, terrible as it might turn
out for the Anarchist cause, Barcelona was only a sideshow.
'Governments are about to fuck things up for everybody, make life
more unlivable than Brother Bakunin ever imagined. Something truly
terrible is in the works.' "
** Tensions were building all over Europe during this time -
alliances were being forged and war plans made - uprisings quelled.
All was small but for those with a bit of paranoia... This was the
situation in 1909:
http://history.sandiego.edu/GEN/ww1/1909.html
The outcome was that the great powers feared anarchism so much
"Brother Bakunin" recruited Italians, Frenchmen, Scandinavians,
and Slavs into the International Brotherhood, also called the
Alliance of Revolutionary Socialists.

Reaction in Germany - 1842)

890.16 But Reef didn't argue. Which should've surprised him more
than it did.
He's been co-opted by the $$$ and the sex of European decadence.
