Check out this part back in the desert, when Kit was flipping backwards and
forwards on the train, thinking about railroad metaphysics, around Merv:
The structure out here was revealed immediately--desert punctuated by oases
in a geography of cruelty, barkhans or traveling sand-dunes a hundred feet
high, which might or might not possess consciousness, cloaked and hooded,
not eartly projections of the angel of death, exactly, for species here had
gained a reputation for their ability to hold on even p.752 .... <inhale>..
(and on and on)
...
this would fit really well with the story overall, if we can imagine that
in ancient times, when this desert was fertile, that there just might have
been sculpture, many epochs ago, all blown to sand now.
And it's more of that thing OBA does, approximating never exactly stating,
but vestiges of prior epochs stand in the text, I think, that make a
statment about the fragility of our human condition at this moment.
