The last we saw Kit he was way up North at the door to Shambhala in Tuva,
throat singers --or was it the wind, moving across singers' lips (also
there's a wind going across Dally's face in her attempts to pose for
Arturo), with Prance at the heart of the earth. "Changes of sign" was
invoked then. So this chapter has a cool train changing metaphor to build
on the suspence (like the piston metaphor) building up at the end of his
mission p. 784-7: Our hindsight knows that what could connect us with
Shambhala can end up as business as usual, providing throughput into Asia,
into hands of mining
companies and weapons dealers. Kit feels an ancient epochsong inertia to
escape west, haunted by the unspeakable future, or else get further mired
p. 790 like Fleetwood to "an unspeakable compact with sin an death" or,
travels east. He was truly on one side of a chasm, p. 771 and chasms are
bad things in mathematical topography. Dally, on her own mission will view
her end of the chasm on p. 905.
I love this quote "Dispair like a corrupt form of hope" p. 790 There's
something of that Economic theoretical-ness to this statement. What would
John Maynard Keynes have said about this? Also noteworthy is that in this
year King Edward VII dies and George is instated as King. Gifts from
Germans in honor of his memory are received by Englishmen who had deep
bonds with Germans, like that Crouchmas might have received.
The time stamp in atddta32 is June 30th, 1910 (p. 791 although it might be
1909 but time's kinda iffy of course in ATD) "In the light from the fallen
star (Venus?)... in its pallid nightlessness, [Kit] had dreamed insomniac
the possibility of
another fallen thing like the one he had once helped the vormance people so
terribly bring to its victims." Kit leaves to head back to Turkey. But the
true nature of the latest tangent he's on isn't revealed until the note
from Mulciber is described and it's safely in his pocket p. 912.
Hope continues to pool up in the Bardo Pond, a nice place to enjoy a delay.
One of my favorite bands.
