Lew had gotten Dally interested in money again, is why she was on this
tougher mission, to find out even more on Crouchmas, a tougher mission for
her, if it holds, 

Just before she leaves to Constantinople he regards Dally, her guileless
spirit, her hand had just touched his sleeve, p. 907 "Some announcement of
Lew's final release from is obligations, if any still existed, to the T.W.I
T." is how Lew holds Dally's smittening nature up to the Cohen's warning
back on 227 that the 22 "cards" caused the most damage..  "Would the light
of her innocence..even be enough to show him..that the major arcana..had
never necessarily been in... a condition of sin" 

Would anyone be able to help give light to the relative pressure release
valve Lew is feeling? Is it perhaps we're all of us in this web and to suss
out what comes first the chicken or the egg the criminal or the
revolutionary. the engineering education leading up to bomb delivery system
creator..aren't we all just lookin for a payin' job?

Here's an observation- How does Dally get from Charing Cross to Szged so
quickly? No trains could get readily into Budapest, unrest there...the
delay puts her in the right place at the right time. In real life the trip
would take a long time. It bugs me- boom you're there- but the book would
be too long if he made the trips more fluid I suppose.

By the way this section 907-917 is fairly chopped up, cut editing,
flashbacks. 

In real life, Hungary had just held elections --for candidates in the
Khuen-Hedervary ministry had made "voting reform" a platform but had
delayed the actual project because census would be done in 1911, so about 7
percent of the population was able to vote, Magyars were elected, you bet
there was unrest among the hoardes before those elections, and after, not
to mention a terrible flood that summer. Emperor King Joseph had recently
opened the parlaiment with now eerie comments "The ever-increasing love of
peace of the European States fills us with the confidence in the stability
of the blessings of peace."

In ATD we can tell there's efforts to prevent some knowledge from getting
out, but at the same time, innocents are targeted to receive the
intelligence quite easily. Dally had been seen by Crouchmas, walking out of
his mystery ministry offshore bank office, so he sends idiot spies Irmi and
Erno looking for her. 

 p. 909 "Kit Traverse, meanwhile, was sitting in a Wagons-Lits train headed
the other way, toward Paris, which according to schedule should've been
rolling into Buda-Pesth about now, except for a slow start owing to
mysterious revolutionary activities on the line, so that both his train and
Dally's happen to arrive at the same time...."

They seem to want any old Zaharoff Girl, knowing that he'll pay ransom too,
so they're thinking, just get any redhead. Kit boards, the back and forth
farce starts with all the characters, Dally lets slip a declaration of
knowing Crouchmas but the abductors don't see this for the board in front
of their eyes now that they blur Kit with Zaharoff and ask about selling
them a submarine. 

the star motif is so huge -- the star on stage, star as dally in the major
arcana, the star as the dog star cirius, the star that is the first star of
the night in the passion night of Kit and Dally.
