Side note, to get an idea of the state-of-the art in airplane engineering
at the time, check this out http://tiny.cc/sJQ7g !!! I found that there
was an aviation meeting planned in Budapest in June, and Orville Wright
would not be attending it, according to the NYT April 22, 1910. Another NYT
article June 10th reports an accident that happened at it--"Frey, the
German aeronaut, while making a flight here to-day, lost control of his
biplane, and dashed into the grand stand. Six women were injured, two
probably mortally. Frey was not hurt. The aviators Latham, Andree, and
Biallovuci had similar accidents, but no one was injured." Even in
September 1910, NYT reports "George Von L Meyer, Secretary of the Navy, who
was one of the most interested spectators in the recent Bomb-throwing
contests at the recent Harvard aero meet, to-day gave his views of the
danger to battleships..."In the first place, the aviator would have to go
up several thousand feet to be out of rifle range, and the size of the bomb
he would be able to carry would not seriously hurt any battleship, unless
it went down the funnel..." foreshadowing to the sort of moves Kit can make
in an aeroplane later?
