Complete with Miners in 1849, Minnie-who watches over the gold, a sexy
Bandit in Disguise, Sheriff looking for him, "blood dripping from the loft,
described by spine chilling arpeggios," and at long last, two lovers
departing West to the Snowy California forest.
Pynchon may not have written this opera, but he probably would have liked
seeing it in it's debut 10 December 1910 in New York City at the
Metropolitan Opera House, with Enrico Caruso as the one with the disguise
(coconsciousness!?), Toscanini conducting, .. One day if you get a chance
to read the opera chronology that I read, you will see even more, here's a
bit:

"La Fanciulla del West was a triumphant success with the New York audience.
There were 47 curtain calls, and between the second and third acts, Puccini
was crowned with a silver crown bearing the national colors of Italy and
the United States."

"In an impssioned plea (Fratelli, non v'e al mondo peccatore cui non s'apra
una via di redenzione) she reminds the miners that no sinner is beyond
redemption and begs them to spare his life.."

"the plot.. belonged to a chapter of American History which was still very
vivid in the public's mind."
