Ultimately, the controversy ran out of steam after some high-powered
literary colleagues rode to the rescue. 

``Suddenly over the hill, a cavalry including Updike, Amis and amazingly
Thomas Pynchon, who doesn't often speak up, said, `Wait a minute, we need to
use documents sometimes,''' McEwan recalled. ``So that was rather
marvelous.''
