In an article I am sure I read, although I have NEVER been able to find it again, despite going deep and deeper and deeper into Google, it was stated that he and Pynchon were
  "friends".....that Ian lent TRP a copy of The Heavenly City of the 18th Century Philosophers.
   
  For M & D background, I suggest having once read (for a class) this book.
