reminds me of more of the unsayable that's not being said in ATD? that of
the linkage between fantasy of mastering machinery and engineering,
optimism of this sort of endeavor, with a shadow forming over it of the
"peace" industry.

(I verified this by reading the NYT historical online database pdf as well
and the bulk of it remains the same text, minor enhancements by NYT but the
"I heard him say" quote is the same!)
