The serpentine plot of "Atmospheric Disturbances" has drawn
comparisons to the work of Thomas Pynchon and Jorge Luis Borges. Ms.
Galchen's narrator, Dr. Leo Liebenstein, meets a patient who is
convinced that he receives secret missions to control the weather via
Page Six in the New York Post. The patient draws Leo into the supposed
interdimensional workings of a secretive group called "the 49 Quantum
Fathers." Meanwhile, Leo is convinced that his wife has been replaced
with a double, and his quest for answers takes him from New York to
Argentina. Ms. Galchen's descriptions of mathematical ideas and
meteorological models are coupled with an emotional tale about
loss....
