It speaks to the self-awareness produced by listening, as the poet identifies with a personified cracked bell, his alter-ego, and inscribes this split lyric ...

And, of course, the LIBERTY Bell was cracked even in 1849....(for a novel
about revolution...relevant?)

"You can't unring a cracked Liberty Bell. ..."
