P. 180 Nechaev tells D. that 'seeing is not just a matter of the eyes, but of correct understanding".....

D. seeing the wretched conditions and feeling sympathy--maybe Christian, maybe simply human sympathy does not matter (says N.),

compared to 'recognizing the forces that determine the lives to which these people are condemned"...

By having these words come from Nechaev, Coetzee CONDEMNS all Marxist-like
analyses of the social condition?? I suggest.

The writer, D. (C.?) sees no lines.....writers see the world and the people in it straight.
