Preparation for "the Day"...

Hello all,
I've put it off long enough - so I'm thinking of beginning Against The
Day this December and seeing if I can finish it in a month (highly
unlikely but the Christmas vacation may give me a fighting chance).
Could any of you advise me of what I might do to ready myself for this
daunting task? I was thinking something along the lines of this primer
for Gravity's Rainbow...

If each of you could just name one thing that I might quickly read up on
before December so the experience won't make me feel like a complete
idiot, I'd greatly appreciate it. No spoilers though please :-)
Or if you think I should begin without any prior and deliberate
preparation, let it be known and I'll consider diving in and seeing what
happens.
Thanks,
Guy
