Professor says rock 'n' roll trips out literature

Without LSD - without rock 'n' roll - the climate of American society
would be much different than it is today, said UT English Professor
Russell Reising.
"Vietnam wouldn't have ended when it did, the politics of the 70s
wouldn't have gone the way they did and social movements - black
power, women's rights - wouldn't have got off the ground," he said.
Reising recently returned from an international literary conference in
China where he spoke of "Rock and Roll and the Contemporary World
Novel."
"Novels since about 1960 - DeLillo, Rushdie, Pynchon - everything from
mainstream, Nobel prize-winning novelists down to the new guys, are
using the world of rock 'n' roll ... [its] songs, themes [and] images
as a legitimate way to chart out the action of their novels," Reising
