I think the theory that the Credit Meltdown was McCain's main downfall
is far from the whole story. After each debate Obama saw a rise in
the polls. McClain's post-convention Palin-bounce was very
short-lived because the public quickly got a taste for who she really
was, and didn't like her. That decline just happened to coincide with
the Crash. She was probably McCain's biggest anchor dragging him
downward. But she was a clear sign that McCain was erratic in his
decision-making, another reason (beside the specter of a President
Palin) for his downfall. And McCain's all-negative
character-assassination campaign contrasted with Obama's steady,
unruffled demeanor (evidenced in each debate) also added to the old
man's decline. Why McCain didn't veer toward the center after the
convention, but instead appealed ever further to the right is the big
mystery of this election, and his biggest mistake. The real heart of
his decline.
