re doorstoppers

There's an equal and opposite reaction though - I've had a number of
doorstoppers that caused probable spinal damage from lugging them around for
so long in the hope that they'll improve.

I've long considered it some kind of inverse law - you'll hate a crappy long
book a lot more than a short piece of rubbish.

I still harbour grudges towards The Brothers Karamazov, The Adventures of
Kavalier and Clay and DeLillo's Underworld for these reasons. My editions
were brick-heavy and made me increasingly angry as they plodded along.
