I wonder about the same thing. I'm in early childhood education -
Kindergarten - (and don't even ask me about No Child Left Behind -
gads). These kids don't even know this is innovative but their
parents do.
My kids (not middle class!) think of the Smartboard as a giant
interactive television set or a giant game cube. They've got that in
their homes. I've found that the kids pay more attention when I'm
using it in instruction - but they really want to play the games
where they don't have to think. They want to play Build a Jack-o-
Lantern or something - There are some excellent programs and sites
and so on though. One downside is that the administration keeps the
system locked out of anything with too much advertising, Youtube,
stuff like that. But it's still a totally excellent resource.

is on my wall daily and the kid interact with it (my direction).
Often the Smartboard is used like a techie overhead projector to
explain the worksheet. (gads again). Yes, keeping the instructors
up to date with this stuff is a challenge. I use my smartboard
daily. Other teachers use it once in a great while but some not at
all. I use the computer to create my color coded and standards
based lesson plans. This is not easier than the old fashioned way
but it's prettier and more complete.
My point in relation to the TCoL49 discussion is that I guess the
user will use the system to his own interests - kids have always been
more interested in the chatting on the telephone or games than in
reporting in to their parents or thinking. No communication system
is going to really upgrade the level of thinking and change what
folks communicate about.
