In The Kindly Ones the protagonist, by this time in a pretty disassociated state himself, along with a fellow officer and their driver, separated from their regiment and trying to dodge the advancing Red Army enters a church and finds an old man, very aristocratic,  playing the Art of the Fugue on the chuch organ. Normally this would have been soothing but now it infuriates him. He pulls out his Luger and shoots the man in the head. He explains to his comrade "It's because of the corrupt Junkers that Germany is losing the war. National Socialism is collapsing and they're playing Bach."
