On the following evening, to a new location, “the Café Mazlum ..., where it
seemed the whole town had turned out to hear the great Karakas Effendi
sing”. However, in some contrast to the writing of 58.13, “the whole town”
will remain absent from the narrative, as will “the great Karakas Effendi”.
Cyprian continues to perform authority, and then ceases to be, “pretending
to be Gabrovo Slim” (ie taking over the part played heretofore by the
“mournful Bulgarian”, 845). Cf. Cyprian’s earlier take on “the part of a
civil-service wife” (840). Here, Cyprian instructs (the one known as)
Gabrovo Slim to wear a fez as part of his own disguise. When the Bulgarian,
already disguised, demurs, Cyprian instructs Danilo to reinforce the
instruction. This instruction (“... explain to him”) returns us to the fez
scene on 832, where Danilo had taken the initiative.
