good pointer - to my mind - as to further discussion on this issue
a) wwPs - what would Pynchon say
b) it is nuanced (obviously pirates suck, and just as obviously, if
there is a fucked up situation in the world anywhere, the US - or,
people hailing from there - has both either started or worsened it
*and* tried to help...nuff said)

but point a, ah that is a good one: what would OBA write?

just going to wikipedia, I learned that in 1960 both British Somalia
and Italian Somalia (gee, I thought the only Italian colony was
Italian Swiss Colony (sorry, joke, that's a cheap wine)) became
independent and joined forces.
--- thus fulfilling the silly joke requirement (with my lesser
abilities, obviously)

That currently there is a dearth, or paucity of central gov't...making
it a place like The Zone, and just maybe the pirates a bit like Ms
Gnahb
--- ob GR reference

A dizzying succession of governments, especially in the 20th century
and not without some dramatic stuff during the AtD years, highly
reminiscent of the Mexico portions of AtD
-- I'm sure that an adventurous Traverse brother could make friends
and influence people in Somalia even today

whenever I read these things about faraway places, I guess what I
picture is some hardworking family loving schlub like myself who is
hoping all the violence will go away or at least spare him and his
loved ones...
--- my attempt to inject a humanistic viewpoint and cut thru the politics...
