I've never been able to figure out why Los Angeles and environs has always 
been so uptight about the use of public space including draconian automotive 
and pedestrian traffic regulation. There's so much area to spread out in--or 
at least there used to be. And at the same time it's so free of blue laws. 
You can buy booze in supermarkets and gas stations and maybe even drive-ins. 
Not sure about the latter two.  What may really top it off, there are 
residential areas you can't leave your car on the street overnight. And I 
don't mean just on Tuesdays .
