I know Julie Packard because my sister and her were best friends in
grade school. We grew up in Los Altos when it was turning from hills
filled with apricot orchards to a wealthy suburb and the heart of
Silicon Valley. Julie had a lot of privileges as a Packard but she
was down to earth and very hard working. She used her influence to
lead the creation of a wonderful Aquarium; she is remarkably modest
about her role in the project. My sister and I met with her several
years ago in Monterey and I was impressed with the lack of executive
ego and the passion for the teaching/research role of the Aquarium.
