nymphet-chasing, ukelele-playing, bad-punning, old-movies-loving,

Man, you Gaddis folks are a courtly bunch.  When we drive someone off
on the Pynchon list we do a sack dance over the corpse, burn the body,

the group. Following a reading of the relevant correspondance, I see
that you and I are essentially in agreement about what constitutes
elitism, which must be distinguished from the necessary existence of
elites. Also, I think we would both agree that it is kitsch and not a

Barzun on the use and abuse of art. It seems to me that you and he are
in fundamental agreement.
    About your judgments regarding Gaddis, I for one found them most
interesting. However, I would suggest the the problem of Gaddis is
considerably more complicated than your astute analysis suggests. If
that was all there was to say in judgment, I do not think my friend
Dworkin would have remained his friend for all those years.
