Jumping on Tore's post about the stylistic use of this phrase,
I just wanted to add the other phrase in this book---which Dave Monroe
tossed off almost as a joke....BUT we know it isn't.

That phrase is "As So-and-So-is always saying" always referring to recorded songs...first heard by me,anyway
---is it in any earlier books?----in TRP's review of Love in the Time of
Solitude......'As Mickey and Sylvia are always saying, Love is Strange"..

Talk about a little playing with time!?....
