Davis is often a bit glib in his discussion of literature and music in
the book, but the rest of 'City of Quartz' more than makes up for it
as a kind of counter history of L.A.

He describes the utopian path not taken as a prologue to the book,
namely the Llano del Rio colony, a possible influence on Pynchon's
Arrepentimiento in IV.
