Alice writes:
"Doc says, he can hire some dude to
dig the waves for him over in Hawaii."

Alice so smartly posts much on the ironic humor in Vineland
and IV, then ends with this----as if this is Doc talking straight:

It is an expressed joking fantasy about what he could do with 'a nickel from every client' who etc., common in our world, middle and otherwise...........

And notice what he would do----not surf himself, not live in an endless
summer but 'give it" to someone else.....by 'hiring them to surf! yes, IV is about work, fer sure.

This shows something other than 'the class' to which Doc wants to belong. Clearly, in a few words of the text, Doc shows he wants not to be a part of the middle class who hires others to 'work' for them, but that he would rather keep doing what he is doing but give money away....

Not within the straightworld, Doc is classless, so to speak, but his heart is a class act, we start to learn. "Class act" as in attitude not class posturing.
