Subject: The 60s redux...
Date: Fri, 26 Mar 1999 09:54:13 PST
I hereby proclaim that the 3rd side of the Beatles White Album is, sub
rosa of course, a synopsis of the 60s, as Dante's Inferno was to the
Church and its history:
regarde:
1. Birthday--the birth of rock and roll, feverish, communal, the first
blast as to what will come.
2. Yer Blues--a period of growth, a sense of maturity, of frustration,
a willingness to concede the brillance of the void, but still not grown
enough to accept it. alas, the eventual foundation of the revolution
and of late 20 C man.
3. Mother Nature's Son--the period of reflection after the battles in
the streets, free love, singing songs for everyone, walking with Blake's
wife, you become naked. naivety...brenschluss
4. Everybody's Got Something...--harbinger of moral decay, of the onset
of the freewheeling 70s, anarchic, the man of yer blues raising
demons...screeching come come on
5. Sexy Sadie--the loss of spiritual innocence, a bitter pill of
material comfort and the confirmation that the monkey always wins.
6. Helter Skelter--armageddon, pure naked abandon.
7. Long, Long, Long--coda. haunted memories, a hard-earned grace,
ragged but fully realized, a reach for more than what came before. rock
transformed.
