Denis

Saint Denis (also called Dionysius, Dennis, or Denys) is a Christian
martyr and saint. In the third century, he was Bishop of Paris. He was
martyred in approximately A.D. 250, and is venerated in the Roman
Catholic Church as patron of Paris, France and as one of the Fourteen
Holy Helpers. The modern name "Denis" derives from the ancient name
Dionysius.

Bishop of Paris, and martyr. Born in Italy, nothing is definitely
known of the time or place, or of his early life. His feast is kept on
9 October. He is usually represented with his head in his hands
because, according to the legend, after his execution the corpse rose
again and carried the head for some distance....

This was a cover of a Randy & The Rainbows song "Denise," which
reached #10 in America in 1963. The song was written by Neil Levenson
after meeting a girl called Denise Lefrak. He originally called it
"Pretty Girl" before changing it the title to "Denise."

"'Drug'? 'Store'? Okay?"

Boo! Get off! I mean, obviously -- by way of mitigation -- the
character in question is a typically Pynchon-esque hippie burnout, and
obviously some brand of haute-Pynchonoid satire is being enacted here
upon the concept of, you know, "signs." But the fact remains: the
drugstore/drugstore joke, qua joke, is an exhibition of stoner wit so
feeble it would have been sent back by the writers of The Fabulous
Furry Freak Brothers and accepted only with some demurral by Cheech
and Chong.

"like Godzilla always sez to Mothra"

http://godzilla.wikia.com/wiki/Godzilla_vs._Mothra

Pynchon apparently wrote a letter to his editor, Cork Smith, in the
1960s saying that he was working on two books: one on Mason & Dixon,
and one loosely inspired by Godzilla. See Crying of Lot 49 Chapter 3]
& Vineland, page 142. It was recounted by Pynchon to his friends that
to continue to collect royalties he had to come up with the sentence
from his next book. The sentence was something like "Hiro stood in the
wreckage of what was once downtown Tokyo and as he looked down at the
giant footprint he explained to the insurance adjusters in his
Japanese accent 'clearly reptilian.'" [This anecdote is spurious at
best. Is there a source for this? Any evidence?]

a: 57, b: 42 - Godzilla II

http://cl49.pynchonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Chapter_3

Pynchon is fond of transplanting characters from one novel to another.
Takeshi Fumimoto is a perfect example. He made his first appearance as
a bit player in Gravity's Rainbow where he was one of a pair of wacky
kamikaze pilots. His first name is almost surely borrowed from Takashi
Shimura, the star of Godzilla -- a film referenced in the very same
sentence, when Zoyd plays the Godzilla theme music to accompany
Takeshi's first appearance. (Pynchon seems to have been thinking about
this beast for some time: There's a boat named Godzilla II in The
Crying of Lot 49 -- and the word is that he loves Japanese horror
flicks. In fact, at one point rumor had it that he was writing a book
with Mothra as a major character.)

Pipeline Pizza

"Pipeline" is a surf rock song by The Chantays in 1963....

[...]

The song, originally called "Liberty's Whip," was renamed after the
band members saw the Bruce Brown film entitled "Endless Summer", a
groundbreaking documentary film of two California natives circling the
globe in search of the perfect wave. The term "pipeline" refers to a
phenomenon in surfing in which the crest of the wave on which a surfer
is riding goes completely over his head and lands in front of him,
leaving him in the center of what, from his viewpoint, looks like a
pipe made of water. The song, fitting in with the popular surfing
craze of the time, swiftly rose up the Billboard Pop charts, reaching
#4, and becoming a classic hit of its time.

Although they had a myriad of surf tunes, "Pipeline" was the Chantays'
only hit single, and is considered one of the landmarks of the surf
genre. The track's distinctive sound was in large part due to the mix
being "upside down", in that the bass and rhythm guitars were at the
forefront, while the lead guitar, electric piano and drums were
buried....
