Pynchon loves this image as we know from AtD.

1) 'giant eyeball of society' is a phrase from Emerson's "Nature", right Alice?, solo over to you............

2) an eyeball, not bloodshot, is part of the logo of the Pinkerton Detective agency, where Hammett worked and, of course, nationally famous. 
"We never sleep" is the motto under the eyeball.

3) Look at a dollar bill. Google some of the 'myths', including the illuminati, I believe. 

4) Love that this one is bloodshot, as the eyeballs of our best noir detectives might be!...another f'in' hilarious homage.
