I find that smugness in DeLillo's writing as well - and everything he
writes always seems geared toward getting the novel in question on an
undergrad reading list. Always dealing with the 'hot' cultural studies
topics of the day.
However, contrary to everyone else here I quite enjoyed Cosmopolis.
Probably because the protagonist was such an unlikeable prick that the
narrative voice seemed perfectly appropriate. Even if it was just a
97% fat free version of a Bret Easton Ellis book.
