There's more than a bit of uncomfortable truth there, although we could
argue much of it away: when is a tactic just a tic, the weaknesses of his
strengths, etc.
Note also the ongoing meme: "While I fully appreciate Pynchon in the
abstract, as a literary-historical juggernaut-a necessary bridge from, say,
Nabokov (with whom he studied at Cornell)..." Once more, not that I think it
will help: other than Ve'ra Nabokov's recollection of some N. student's
distinctively neat script, there is no evidence for this. We'd just *like*
it so much if it were true.
