Just before this all turns into a round of "Telephone", I'm that sound
engineer who replied to Steve Moore. I compared the YouTube of
Pynchon's voice from "Diatribe of a Mad Housewife," "All's Fair in
Oven War." & the Penguin video. This didn't involve any "objective"
analysis—no 'spectrum analysis', no LEDs or VU meters— I was simply
listening for vocal color, timing, phrasing. There's cartoonish
alteration of vocal presentation in all three but this dude ain't no
Mel Blanc or Scott Mcfarland. Tthe voice at the bottom of all these
low-level shifts in affect & pitch present the same Joisy glottal
stops, the same smoker's burr inflecting the ends of phrases where the
breath runs out, the same vaudeville timing.
