Joni Mitchell, who is part of the GR story here, probably taken from that note on the pynchonwiki, is famous for refusing permission for all attempted quotes from her songs....

At a company I was with, we had to scrap a first printing of a decent but
udner-the-radar novel because a Joni Mitchell chapter epigraph had not been cleared in time---and was refused.
