Doug! Chill! :-)
I do heartily recommend Lebowski. What was it that so annoyed you on first viewing?
As has been pointed out, there's some fantastic dialogue in the film, and plenty of IV similarities/resonances.
Funny enough, what Heikki said about IV being 'about coming down' reminded me that on my first read of IV I now and then thought there were some minor similarities to the tone of another 'end of an era' film, set at the tail end of teh Sixties, namely 'Withnail & I', which if you haven't seen, get that sorted immediately, it's an infinitely more important and cherishable film than Lebowski. A sample:
"London is a country coming down from its trip..... We are 91 days from the end of this decade and there's gonna be a lot of refugees. They'll be going round this town shouting 'Bring out your dead!'.... If you are hanging onto a rising balloon you are presented with a difficult decision: let go before it's too late, or hang on and keep getting higher, posing the question, how long can you keep a grip on the rope? They're selling hippy wigs in Woolworths, man. The greatest decade in the history of mankind is over. And as Presuming Ed here has so consistently pointed out, we have failed to paint it black."
