In the late 80s I knew a guy in the magazine sales rep business who
used to fondly recalled "dust" back in his own salad days during the
'73 gas crisis when he was running a gas station and skimming profits
that apparently went largely into his growing drug habits and related
activities. My impression always was that PCP was horrible stuff, and
only could somebody who had never had anything but cheap Mexican
brickweed ever think that PCP is anything like THC, but of course
there's no accounting for taste, I knew some girls in high school --
Midland, Texas, in the '60s, while W was away at prep school -- who
seemed to be having an awful lot of fun one afternoon sniffing glue
until they messed up their car pretty badly. By the time I met the
guy in the late '80s, San Francisco, he had moved on to smoking
"freebase" cocaine back in the pre-crack day. Quite the frantic Friday
afternoon scene in his shop -- the display ad sales guys for the
magazine he represented worked out of his house -- sometimes multiple
deliveries from a guy who also drove a legitimate retail delivery
route across the Sunset district.
