Left my first copy of IV and two other books, Jim Webb’s Lost Soldiers
and Paul Theroux’s Mosquito Coast on my Adirondack chair at the Sunken
Ghetto Beach Club where the gulls are quite aggressive. These birds,
while they don’t look like vultures, but more like the birds Twain
describes in his travels, often waiting, motionless as sculptured
ornaments, will suddenly swoop in and tear a well planned beach
blanket party to pieces. Chips, sandwiches, cups, napkins, zigzags,
corkscrew, aluminum foil, fries, smoked salmon, nuts, cereal, oil,
beer cans, plastic bottles, newspapers and magazines, toys …tossed
and strewn about, but it’s odd that they ripped away at Jim Webb and
Theroux, but left IV be. The wind and planned obsolescence took care
of it.
