Sorry if I'm casting too broad a net. My point can be found in those  
excerpts from Raymond Chandler's books.

Pynchon & Chandler appear to have a lot in common—their unique brands  
of humor, their shared suspicion of the cops, even more shared  
suspicion of the puppet-masters, a cynical eye towards drug laws and  
drug enforcement. What the two have in common, more than anything  
else, is the way the two of them stretch the limits of descriptive  
language. My point is that Pynchon has more in common with Raymond  
Chandler than Henry James.
