In his Introduction to the SL tales Pynchon notes the new freedom that
writers felt they had after prose fiction turned a working class
corner and the young writers understood that they didn't need to write
like Shakespeare or Nabokov for that matter. Kinda like the story of
the Quarry Rank High School lads who,"for the first time realized that
music did not belong to the musicians and that anyone could get up and
have a go at it. It was like giving paint sets to monkeys
...skiffle..."  (paraphrase  Hunter Davies)
