Great stuff, Tore. A *lot* of ground covered...


Good catch on the 'and so forth'. You're bang on when you say Pynchon
seems to like using distinct subsets of verbal tics in each book - the
'like that' construction in ATD, and in IV, aside from and so forth,
there is of course the 'double is', and the non-standard use of
'anymore'.


It's really a wonderful thing, that promo vid. Oh for more of that great
voice. The tantalising thought of a Pynchon audiobook narrated by
Pynchon himself remains. And it's great that there are so many
classically Pynchonesque ambiguities, most intriguingly (as you point
out) the playing around with time. Then tehre's the fact that the video
seems to tell us stuff about Doc's past that the book does not, and
those 'facts' don't exactly paint Doc in a positive light - setting up
drug busts and helping cops with shakedown schemes. And so forth.


We're left wondering whether Pynchon was persuaded to do the narration,
or whether he suggested it, or what. And why the video - and the fact
that it's Pynchon narrating - sort of slipped out rather than being
marketed in an orgainsed way. Overall, the existence of this promo
serves to thicken the stew of a supposedly 'light' work that's seeming
less and less simple every day.
