You're right about that. And of course it's the same in GR, where Pynchon
rarely mentions any explicit dates, but where even the most casual referece
to the weather or a song playing on the radio nevertheless allows the reader
- at least as thorough a reader as Steven Weisenburger - to pinpoint the
action precisely in time. Weisenburger - or others of his caliber - have
yet to map the exact chronology of AtD, but it's probably the same deal
as in GR: Casual, easily ignored remarks may be just the chronological
signposts we're looking for in the wilderness. Damn. If only Pynchon
could include a timeline in the frontmatter of his next novel.
