Well, and I think I would have to add Zoyd. That's right! First off,
if Pynchon is 'satirizing' Zoyd he's doing it affectionately, and the
reader is obviously intended to like Zoyd, just like we're expected to
like his spiritual half-brother, Doc. And you could argue that ZOyd,
by dint of just recognising his own faults, his own immaturity,
achieves a kind of maturity. I'm perhaps not putting this very well,
but you know what I mean. Hell, Zoyd even undergrows emotional
'growth', does he not? NOt enough for James Wood of course, but it'll
do for me...
