I'm up to page 100 of "The Long Goodbye," Marlowe as knight errant  
incarnate, quite errant and usually off course as well. It's one thing  
to be chivalrous to nobility, another altogether another when you try  
to do a good for pond scum like Terry Lennox. Which always is the  
point in Philip Marlowe's Los Angeles—karma really is a bitch. Bay  
City in particular is one fictional realm that had long-term influence  
on Pynchon from a long way back. Funny how Chandler spins Hindemith  
and Khachaturian into "Goodbye's" mix.
