I found passages that take a dim eye on the lavender circus. Just  
callin' a spade a spade here.

And yet we're drawn to Marlowe much as we're drawn to James Bond, with  
that threat of sudden demise constantly on the horizon. There's an  
element of Chandler's writing that got stuck to "American" speech in  
the latter half of the twentieth century, an integral element of the  
verbal tics we can hear in the "narrative voice" of popular films and  
television programs, particularly in the fifties.
